Hybrid work model requiring most employees to work from the office at least three days a week. Remote employees living within 50 miles of a Google office are required to transition to this hybrid schedule or opt for a voluntary exit package. Stricter enforcement began in April 2025 for some remote employees. In-person collaboration is cited as a primary reason for the RTO push. Failure to comply with the RTO policy could result in job loss or the offer of a voluntary exit package. Some remote employees are being offered one-time relocation budgets to move closer to an office. Specific departments like Google Technical Services, People Operations, Search, marketing, research, and core engineering teams are particularly affected or among the first to implement these guidelines. Google has stated there are no immediate plans for a five-day return to the office.
